Pacific Northwest Racing Assocation (PNWORCA) organizes winter series small boat races during the winter and spring months.
Monday Night Intervals Lake Padden - Typically starting in Spring and running into early Fall, these intervals help paddlers prepare for three key races: Ski to Sea, Gorge Downwind Champs, and the Salmon Row and Paddle.
Lake Whatcom Wednesday Night Races - Following a similar season the Padden Intervals, this 3.5-mile time trial takes place around the first basin of Lake Whatcom. It's a great opportunity for newcomers to racing small boats to learn skills such as paddling in boat wash, drafting, and buoy turns. Races usually begin at 5:55 pm, with experienced paddlers starting at 6. An Aquatic Invasive Species sticker is required. The race runs throughout the Day Savings season from Spring to Fall.
Hot Five Race Series - Enjoy five consecutive fun races held weekly in late Summer, organized by surfskier Kevin Olney. Announcements can be found on the Whatcom Paddlers email group. The focus is on variety and enjoyment, with past races incorporating swimming, remounts, capturing the Shark float, and paddling specific vessels (SUP, OC, Surfski, Multiperson, etc.). Representation from OCs has been limited in the past. Points are cumulative for the series, and participants can discard one race from their total points, with exciting prizes awarded at the end.
